Do Geese See God

Do Geese See God is about Topher, a lexicographer who is so stuck in her precise definitions of life, that she cannot move forward in her life. It literally takes being hit by lightning to free her from her own controlling confinement. Topher’s lightning accident leaves her words out of verbal reach, and her identity turned upside down. Two critical defining relationships, one with her unhappy partner, Melissa, and the other with her controlling, well-meaning, best friend, Sampson, are called into question after her accident. Sampson and Topher have maintained a legal marriage on paper, with neither of them able to move on from this primary relationship in their lives.

The accident helps Topher find an unexpected friendship with Sampson’s boyfriend, Eddie, and she gives herself over to a new love, Lily, her intuitive book editor. Topher’s Nurse serves to provide the story’s metaphoric weather reports, and helps Topher find her way through her recovery.

Do Geese See God moves backwards in time, returning to the moment Topher is struck by lightning. At its heart Geese is a play about emotional versus intellectual intelligence.

Aaron Marcotte as Eddie, Melissa Fernandes as Lily, Robin Christ as Topher, Brett Young as Sampson, Diversionary Theatre, San Diego, CA, Feb. 2007. Geese is unique in its cast of both gay and lesbian characters.
